I'm sure being prepared and knowing what to expect is the key to survival.Sue Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16008609198511182782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-48743789531278835772011-06-20T13:40:40.814+01:002011-06-20T13:40:40.814+01:00Like John Zimmer says, you have to do what you can...Like John Zimmer says, you have to do what you can to mitigate the risk, and that means always be prepared.

I believe at the heart of it, men are territorial in the same way others are in the animal kingdom. Whether it's over football, women, or a parking space, men will sometimes come to fists when they feel someone has "encroached on their turf". Most of the fights I have been involved in were related to someone insulting or putting their hands on a woman I was with at the time. I felt they crossed the line and invaded my turf. Wrong or right, peer pressure only makes it worse as no one likes to back down in front of their friends or lovers.SenseiMattKleinhttp://karate-kids.com.au/blog/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-86890910986240964852011-06-14T10:36:31.615+01:002011-06-14T10:36:31.615+01:00Hi John, you're right - it is a big topic. This may help the woman formulate a winning strategy if they were not able to avoid an attack.

Great topic for serious evaluation Sue!JOHN W ZIMMERhttp://myselfdefenseblog.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-52148682798585290582011-06-11T11:09:30.941+01:002011-06-11T11:09:30.941+01:00John, You know - I think one of the problems with ...John, You know - I think one of the problems with self-defence training in traditional dojos is that it is not focused or targeted in any way to the people learning it; it is too general and we are treated as if we are all the same. We focus too much on technique and not enough on strategy or dealing with likely attack scenarios.

Journeyman, It will be interesting to hear the thoughts of someone who has knowledge and experience in the field. There is an upside and a downside to taking the 'green pill' (was the pill green in The Matrix?). The upside is you'll see the tactics and techniques of the martial arts in such a bright light. The downside is, you'll see them in a light that your instructors do not. That can create problems.John Coleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14634192254115557179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-70440940401279079232011-06-10T14:17:34.355+01:002011-06-10T14:17:34.355+01:00Hi Charles, thanks for the comment, I'll check...Hi Charles, thanks for the comment, I'll check out those sites you mention.Sue Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16008609198511182782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-75147538477802316872011-06-09T16:57:47.326+01:002011-06-09T16:57:47.326+01:00Understanding is the first step in my view. The crux of the issue for self defense is to "know what to look for" with social and a-social violence, i.e. tribal monkey dance vs. predatory violence, etc.

You really did nail it down. I see and read similarities between what you wrote, what was in the source you gave, and the information in:

Facing Violence and Meditations of Violence.

You might find both the sites:

No Nonsense Self Defense by Marc MacYoung and the Conflict Communications by Marc and Rory Miller.

Your willingness to get past the distasteful topic to study it is the hallmark of a true martial artist.Charles Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13812618556413423872noreply@blogger.com
