Glad you're enjoying your training. We have a lot of families that train together too.Sue Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16008609198511182782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-36167235974823710702012-04-16T16:19:07.879+01:002012-04-16T16:19:07.879+01:00Great blog, and an interesting subject, I trained ...Great blog, and an interesting subject, I trained GoJu Ryu back in the early 1980s and after 3 years of awful blisters (and the hard macho attitude of the dojo) I finally quit, due the master at that time strictly forbidding any footware, on several occasions I would leave blood trails up and down the Dojo, I was told to man up suffer in silence and urinate on my feet or rub white spirit on them to toughen them up. I have now returned to Martial Arts at the grand age of 48 :) and I now train in Taeqwondo and we all wear shoes, be they kunkfu slippers or martial art trainers, our instructor wears vibram 5 fingers, very cool. anyway finally I can enjoy my training and Im climbing the ranks with my young Son and having great fun too boot :)James.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00077476401907104205noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-32741859997189799002011-12-28T14:59:41.549+00:002011-12-28T14:59:41.549+00:00Hi Brett, it seems that other sports are also star...Hi Brett, it seems that other sports are also starting to see the benefits of training barefoot (e.g runners) because of the better bio-mechanics so there must be something in the bio-mechanics argument. However, part of me just thinks that the old karate masters wore geta which would be impossible to train in and so they just kicked them aside whilst they trained - could just be as simple as that couldn't it?Sue Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16008609198511182782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-45105910297788246922011-12-28T14:38:45.050+00:002011-12-28T14:38:45.050+00:00I once heard it said that since Ryukyu was an isla...I once heard it said that since Ryukyu was an island nation, karate was often practiced on the beach and shoes would have gotten wet and full of sand.

I never thought this theory held water either.

I'm going to lean towards the bio-mechanics theory as well. seems more rational to wear no foot coverings if youre going to strike with multiple parts of the foot.Kyokushinblog.comhttp://www.kyokushinblog.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-25998255518438081982009-09-15T11:49:19.842+01:002009-09-15T11:49:19.842+01:00Hi Sensei, you are of course correct in everything...Hi Sensei, you are of course correct in everything you say. I would classify all your reasons under 'bio-mechanics in karate' which to me was the most plausable reason for training barefoot.Sue Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16008609198511182782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-56209549976253801992009-09-14T19:05:35.281+01:002009-09-14T19:05:35.281+01:00Hi SueC.All the mentioned reasons hold water, but ...Hi SueC.All the mentioned reasons hold water, but it seems to me that miss one. In karate we use 5 feet prime area. Different kicking performed with different, specific areas of feet striking. While we kicking, the foot or part of the foot, bend in a proper manner, and must be sustainable when punch. Those techniques are not inheritable, nor easy, but painstakingly and must be train. This training is the most prominent and most easily if we are barefoot. For example, when kicking on the side, Yoko Geri, we use a foot bride, and his training must, among other things, visually monitor the thumb on the leg. It is not possible if we are not barefoot. In other hand bending the thumb in snickers not so freely as when we are barefoot. Further, the shot with the shoes has a larger strike surface, and feel that comes with the striking surface is not so clear as we are barefoot and so...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
