I did an on-line test a while back to see what kind of learner I was (I thought I was a kinaesthetic learner) but I turned out to be a predominately visual learner. I scored virtually nil on auditory learning - just shows I never listen! Some are audio-oriented, you explain it, they follow. Some are touch-oriented, you move their arm or leg for them, they follow. I have yet to meet anyone who is smell-oriented, but have had a few kids "clear the floor". lolSenseiMattKleinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03254893613341712236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-63927955214273350092011-02-10T07:58:36.738+00:002011-02-10T07:58:36.738+00:00Hi Fran, glad you found me. I have to agree with the term "motor memory". Like that better than "muscle memory".Franhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13777208218185125167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-32542736992819707932011-02-09T08:32:01.455+00:002011-02-09T08:32:01.455+00:00Hi John, you say "...let my body put together...Hi John, you say "...let my body put together the moves as it sees the openings". This seemingly automatic response is what we are all striving to achieve but my point is that it is your brain that 'sees' the openings and your brain that 'puts together the moves'- it's just all happening below your level of consciousness and doesn't require any cognitive thought. Of course you don't need to know how the process is happening in your brain to be able to do it, like for you, it will just happen with hard, repetitive training.Sue Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16008609198511182782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-7841175284169024512011-02-08T18:35:23.920+00:002011-02-08T18:35:23.920+00:00Wow Sue,

The way I've always thought about it is when learning endless techniques - one does not strive to retain every detail (in a fight for instance) but rather the ways ones body can react.

I have always let my body to put together the moves as it sees the openings.

Great topic!John W. I may try filming myself at home though. I think that sometimes you just can't quite see what someone is trying to get at until you see it yourself!

MediTouch, Years ago I used to care for stroke patients when I was working as a nurse. The kind of equipment that you discuss on your blog just wasn't available then (well not on the NHS.) The concept here is intensive active exercise practice to get back the function that has been lost. It is an excellent tool to learn from, be it learning to improve your shortcomings or by seeing what a technique/stance/movement should look like (by seeing others on film).

Happy training to you as well :-)Feliciahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09017194727231120284noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-80537897500975028662011-02-04T16:49:31.216+00:002011-02-04T16:49:31.216+00:00Why thank you Charles and Ninja, I'm flattered...Why thank you Charles and Ninja, I'm flattered you're so impressed!

John, I'm happy to be in your world. I'm all for the 'appliance of science' in martial arts. In fact shukokai karate was developed from shito ryu karate following careful analysis of biomechanical principles so it is well known for being one of the faster, hard hitting styles.Sue Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16008609198511182782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-25081727094680342082011-02-04T02:53:19.285+00:002011-02-04T02:53:19.285+00:00Well done Sue. It is frustrating that 'golf' is more advanced in training methods and fundamental use of more advances in the sciences than the martial arts. I'm advocating (and researching) the use of technology (video) to improve training martial arts tactics and techniques (via immediate feedback and reinforcement). I don't know if it's presumptious to welcome you to my world. BTW, Attilio Sacripanti has developed a post-graduate/masters degree for judo. A kindred spirit in looking to the advances in science to improve our understanding and study of the tactics and techniques of the martial arts. A warning though - since virtually nobody looks to science, there is a lot to apply and it can become a black hole (which is where I currently reside).John Coleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14634192254115557179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-393960805416535992011-02-04T00:30:06.304+00:002011-02-04T00:30:06.304+00:00I have to agree with Charles James!I have to agree with Charles James!Ninjutsu Techniqueshttp://Ninja-Training-Techniques.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-69235094587032164842011-02-03T19:40:57.643+00:002011-02-03T19:40:57.643+00:00I have to say in addition that in over thirty year...I have to say in addition that in over thirty years of practice I have come across no one at either Ik-kyu or Sho-dan level who could verbalize/explain/teach this aspect of a martial system.

In fact, there are a lot of higher ranked folks who would say, Muscle memory, and not know how it all works.

kudo's to you are in order, outstanding job!Charles Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13812618556413423872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361443425638782419.post-22401486327883060932011-02-03T19:37:08.783+00:002011-02-03T19:37:08.783+00:00Absolutely excellent post!Absolutely excellent post!Charles Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13812618556413423872noreply@blogger.com
